Time Management

Here at the BHTS, there is a lot of time throughout your shift to get important work done. Perfecting your time management skills is extremely crucial when it comes to your growth inside and outside of the workplace. By taking ownership of the time you have available, you can improve the quantity and quality of work that gets done, achieve your daily goals and reduce stress, improve the efficiency of the BHTS, and have more time to get other tasks done.

Four valuable time management skills:

  • Planning: This involves accurately estimating the time and effort required to complete certain tasks. Before you start your shift, it is important to plan out what needs to be done throughout the day to get a clear picture of how you need to manage your time that day. I like to check my workstation and get it prepared for usage. Ensuring I have the right tags in the machine, enough ammo for my tagging gun, trash bags prepared, etc.
  • Decision-making and Prioritization: Poor allocation of your time is the result of poor decision-making and prioritization. I like to prioritize what tasks are most important, as well as which tasks will take a significant amount of time. Organizing your time this way ensures you get done what you need to get done, and if you need to pass something down to the next shift, it is a low priority task.
  • Setting Boundaries and Saying No: There will be times when setting boundaries and saying no to certain tasks is necessary to practice proper time-management. If you are on production and need to hit a certain quota of tags, that is the department you need to focus on for the day. There are exceptions if you need to be helpful or cover for your co-worker, but we have different departments and different tasks that need to get done for each department. In order to be effective, you need to set limits and be realistic about how much time there is in a day, and how much you can handle by yourself.
  • Delegating Tasks: At the BHTS, we are blessed to have Light-Duty workers to handle some of the more tedious tasks. This is something that can really help you be more effective with time management. As a leader it is impossible to handle everything by yourself, so delegating tasks helps you in more ways than just one. As I mentioned earlier, a leader sets the example, so do not just give out tasks so you do not have to do anything. It is about working as a team and finding the most effective way to get the job done and make money for the house.
